To our dismay there was no biking today. I can honestly say that I was disappointed. It seems your body just gets used to biking every day when you do it consistently. Now we were eager and ready to go. But instead we just got to sit back, relax, and sail back to Dubrovnik. The seas were much calmer today and we cruised with the wind to our backs, making it much more comfortable and pleasant. I found a nice spot in the sun and lounged with my book all morning. We arrived to the old walled city in time for a late lunch. The city was packed with pesky tourists that arrived by cruise ships, but we managed to have a quiet little lunch and happened to sit next to some Canadians. So nice to converse in English and the best part was the guy knew how to fix my phone that suddenly decided to turn off its network roaming abilities. Finally got my email back. Yeah!
We had an hour or so to stroll around the amazing walled city before our official tour started. The best part of the city tours was that we got a special “English version” and that group was always less than 6 people. Because of the small group size we really got to hear everything and take it all in.
The tour started out by showing us a diagram of the damage sustained to the city by the recent war. This city was originally built by the Greeks in the year 400. This redefined the term “old city” for me and it was (and still is) quite exquisite. The thought of some complete idiots shooting cannons and missiles into it is gut wrenching. Over 70% of the city was damaged in the 1991 war, but has since been restored. The guide pointed out the shrapnel damage to the walls and streets and it was just amazing to see.
We didn’t spend too much time sightseeing after our tour because we planned to spend another entire day there on our own so we made our way back to the ship for our final and farewell dinner. That included great food and drink followed by some German folk songs. I have to say I struggled with those ;-) It was a great evening with all of our new German friends and it was say to say goodbye.
