My Cousin Rocks

I just realized that title has a double meaning. Not only does he rock out in a band, but he "rocks" rocks. Yesterday I pulled up to my mailbox and I'm never all too excited to look in. Every day it's the same old thing . . . a slew of catalogs that I can't shop in and bills. How depressing. But yesterday I found a small box. Now what could that be? I've been very good and haven't shopped online since Christmas.

I took a close look and the return address was my cousin Jamie. Now I'm really curious. I talk to Jamie often and he never mentioned that he was going to send me anything. I couldn't wait to come inside and open it up.

And to my delight, inside the box was this Snoopy T-shirt. Without saying a word, he bought and shipped me the shirt. After seeing it in the store, he thought of me (how could you not?) but he actually bought it and took the time to mail it to me. Jamie, I can't thank you enough. That was so incredibly thoughtful. What a guy!!! Sorry any single ladies out there . . . he's already married.

Peanut Needs a New Nickname

I don't think we should call her "Stinky" anymore. I am oh so happy to report that the little stinker had her teeth professionally cleaned yesterday. I have been waiting for this day for a year. The vet explained the process to us. First they would have to put her under anesthesia and that alone terrifies me because greyhounds are very special dogs when it comes to this process. If the vet is not experienced with the greyhound breed, they could easily kill them. Greyhounds need to be treated completely different than any other dog breed because of their unusual heart rate. I trusted that our doc knew what she was doing.

The vet also explained the procedure and the price tag. Everything was going to depend on the time it took to clean the teeth and how many teeth would need to be removed. Most dogs wake up with less teeth than they started with. Based on Peanut's horrendous dragon breathe and the look of her ugly teeth, I was convinced she would be returned to us completely toothless!

But the doctor called me only a couple hours after I dropped her off with a great report. The cleaning was done in record time and she didn't need any teeth extracted. This was amazing news. And the biggest miracle of all . . . The terrible breathe is gone! I just can't stop hugging her now. Little Miss Lovable can finally be cuddled and kissed without my gag reflex taking over. I am so excited.

And of course, Peanut was a trooper for the whole thing. She happily walks into the vet's office. Happily goes off with a stranger. Wakes up like nothing ever happened and bounces out of the office with her tail wagging. The doctor warned that she may be woozy and sick all night, but not Peanut. She went home and devoured her food and acted like it was any other day. She is one tough cookie.

A Night of Rest and Relaxation

Karlo and I submitted the sample chapter to the publisher today. It was like a huge load off of my shoulders. Today was the first afternoon in over a week that I didn't lug home my brick of a laptop. For the past week I've been dreaming about that new Mac Air laptop. It weighs less than my Dell's powercord and can fit into my purse. Ahhhh yes, I should keep dreaming.

Anyway, I deemed tonight a night to relax. Even Karlo didn't want to go for our nightly trail run. That was the best news of the day for me. Instead of working out and editing his book, I decided to draw my next doodle and he it is . . .

More Bucket List Ideas

I just read Lisa's comment and I can't even imagine NOT having a bucket list. I guess I must be a dreamer. I couldn't be happier with my life, but I NEVER stop dreaming of doing more. Whenever I die, I will be content knowing that I lived the very best life I could have ever hoped for. After watching the movie and being so moved and inspired by it, I told Karlo, "I don't want to wait until I'm dying to live like I'm dying." Karlo said that was the whole point of the movie. Why wait until it's too late? Live like your days are numbered NOW and make the very most of them.

Yesterday I made a list of just some of the things that I still want to do. And that list will grow before it shrinks. Here is a list of some of the things that I've already done and would highly recommend for your Bucket Lists. Having dreams doesn't meant you don't like your life. Having dreams means your living your life.

Cool Things to Do in a Lifetime:
  • Bike a Century (100 miles in one day)
  • Ride a gondola in Venice
  • Dance or perform on stage
  • View Paris from the Eiffel Tower at sunset
  • Hang glide
  • Ride a tandem bike
  • Rescue a pet
  • Make something special with your own two hands and give it to someone you love
  • Hike Yosemite in the Spring
  • Stroll the Tokyo Ginza at night
  • Overlook the Hong Kong bay at night from Victoria Peak
  • Drive a motorcycle
  • Find your soulmate and fall in love
  • Own a jeep and take it off-road
  • Go for walks in the pouring rain
  • Slow dance in the middle of a crowded city street
  • Walk through the Roman Forum and marvel at the history
  • Watch a meteor shower while laying on the beach at 4 AM
  • Experience the real meaning of "cold" on a dog sled in Quebec
  • Get lost for the fun of it (but bring water)
  • Sail the Adriatic Sea island hopping in Croatia
  • Enjoy an Italian lunch feast in a farmhouse in Tuscany
  • Sleep under the stars and among the bears in the Canadian Rockies
  • Start your own business
  • Soar the sky in a glider plane
  • Paint a picture - no matter how "un-artistic" you are
  • Do something that terrifies you (For me it was white water rafting)
  • Set a difficult goal for yourself and attain it
  • Follow one dream, even if it seems silly
  • Love life

My Bucket List

A couple of weekends ago I mentioned that we went to see the movie "The Bucket List." For those of you not in the know, that term refers to a list of things that you would like to do before you die. Several years ago, I made my own list. And I'm very proud to report that I have already crossed off many of the items on that list. Watching the movie and realizing this fact about my own list made me want to start another list. So I did and here it is. I plan to continue to add to it every year.

In no particular order and certainly not complete:
  • Bike across the country
  • Visit New Zealand
  • Take a motorcycle tour through Croatia
  • Take a motorcycle tour through Andalusia
  • Cycle through Tuscany during sunflower season
  • Learn to speak Italian
  • Learn to play an instrument (again and better)
  • Learn to ballroom dance (again and better)
  • Camp outside on New Years Eve
  • Write my book
  • Own a Doberman and name it Attila
  • Tour the country in an RV
  • Start a woodworking business
Do you have a Bucket List? If you don't, you should. Go make one now!

Zumba Report

I just got back from my first real Zumba class. Karlo was the first to ask me how it went and I wasn’t sure how to answer. I’m still not exactly sure how to sum it up. Let’s just say it didn’t go all that terribly well and maybe I was a bit disappointed.

My first and biggest problem was that I wore the wrong shoes. I opted for cute little fashion athletic shoes instead of sneakers. Yes, I looked good – but I was slipping all over the place as if I was wearing ballerina slippers on an ice rink. It was very distracting worrying about and trying desperately not to wipe out.

My second issue was the fact that the gym was packed and I arrived late and stood in the very back. OK, who am I kidding? Even if I was the first one there, I still would have stood in the back. Problem with that is that I couldn’t see the instructor. I, being the overly neurotic person that I am, was constantly wondering, “Did she start on the left foot or right? Am I doing this right?” etc. I couldn’t fully enjoy the experience.

And lastly, I also thought that the energy level wasn’t what I expected. The moves and dances seemed slower than my videos at home. Maybe this is because it was the first class and the instructor is going to build up. Maybe it’s because I just did the “power” DVD yesterday. Maybe it was MY energy level that was down. Not sure. I have a huge headache from the one glass of red wine I drank yesterday, stomach cramps, and I haven’t slept good in two days. Oh that’s another story . . .

On Saturday, I drank my first ever cup of coffee. I’m not sure what on Earth ever possessed me to do such a stupid thing. I made it through 39 years avoiding that evil poison. Why now, did I want to try a cup? Somebody told me that I may actually like Dunkin Donuts Vanilla coffee so out of curiosity I tried it. Dear Lord, it was terrible. I hated it. I couldn’t wait to get that awful taste out of my mouth. And that wasn’t the worst of it. I had this cup at 3 o’clock in the afternoon and was not able to sleep ONE WINK that night. I was up all night staring at the ceiling, cursing every coffee bean in Columbia. Without question, I will NEVER touch coffee again as long as I live.

And to finalize my Zumba story, I am going to continue to go to classes and do the videos at home. I’m sure the classes will improve and I’m loving every minute of my private classes. Please don’t take my first class experience as a sign not to try.

I Can't Believe I Didn't Invent These

Have you ever run across a new product that so precisely answers your needs that you can't believe you didn't think of it first? In one day I discovered three new products like that. Somebody must have had me in mind when they came up with these. One of these days I'm going to invent something too. Here are my new great finds:

Dot band-aids

This is amazing. How long have these existed? These bandaids are called "Oval Dots." Yes, DOTS. The exact word that I used to describe my evil skin affliction. And they are perfect for covering my "dots." This is too good to be true. I need to get a case of them. Here's one on my finger now:

Fleece Scarf with Pockets
This is sheer brilliance. I have been known to wear winter scarves indoors all day long. I like to wear them at work because I wrap my hands with them to keep them warm in cold conference rooms. It is crucial for me to try to keep my hands warm to avoid the need for the above mentioned brilliant item. Now I can actually put my hands into cozy fleece pockets. Love this!

Drying Mitts
I love this idea too. I think this would make drying wet dishes a whole lot easier. These mittens are super absorbent and won't streak dished and glasses. I need these too.

I'm Ahead of Schedule

I was going to try to draw one sketch per week, but I had so much fun the other night with my fish that I just couldn't hold back. Please don't laugh too hard . . . out loud. I'm trying.

And speaking of trying. Karlo tried to make dinner tonight. It was quite the interesting concoction. When I asked him what the dish was called he said, (are you ready?) "Sutott paprikas tojasos olajbogyo." Are you impressed? I really wish I could give you the "sound it out" spelling, but I can't even come close. I should record Karlo saying it (for a good laugh). What it literally translates to is "Fried eggs with paprika and olives." It was quite tasty. I love how he can make anything sound very exotic. I also loves that he sometimes does the cooking!

Today a Ball of Yarn . . .

Maybe someday, in the very distant future, a scarf. Today, Lisa asked me how my knitting was going and I realized that I meant to blog about this and forgot. One of my goals for 2008 was to learn how to knit. I’m not sure why. It’s not like I don’t already have enough hobbies to keep me busy, but I guess I just wanted to learn a new thing. So last week I attended my first “Stitch & Bitch” and quickly learned why it’s called that. I did my share of complaining. I was TERRIBLE at knitting. I am simply stunned at how awkward and unnatural it is to hold, and try to maneuver, those (as I like to call them) sticks. For whatever reason I can not get it through my head that the sticks are called needles. I guess I just can’t call a blunt object a “needle.” If it doesn’t draw blood upon hitting my skin, it’s not a needle.

I will continue to struggle with this ball of yarn once every other week and maybe, with some determination, and a prayer, I will end up with a scarf. Still seems much easier to just go out and buy a scarf in every color, but I’m keeping an open mind. Others sure do make knitting look fun and relaxing. I can’t even find the right adjective for how I made it look – besides impossible. Wish me luck in this endeavor.

I Can't Decide

I've been doing pretty good with my New Year's resolution of exercising every day. Not only do I lift weights with Karlo at lunch time - religiously - but after work I pick between my new Zumba videos, my PlayStation personal trainer, and going for a very brisk hike/jog in our trails. Any of these choices are good ones. I often tend to lean toward the easiest or the most fun choice. Yes, I'm getting to be sort of a slacker in my old age.

I've already talked about Zumba and how much fun it is. I think maybe I'm not getting a good enough work out if I'm having that much fun. Then there's the PS2 game - YourselfFitness. I got this for Christmas and it has to be the greatest concept in gaming. I have my own personal trainer (and she's MUCH nicer than my other personal trainer - Karlo). She tracks my progress and gives me a good no frills basic work out of my choice. I'm not exactly sure why I'm even considering throwing yet another choice into this mix.

But something has me intrigued. A coworker just started a kick-butt work out routine. It supposedly claims a "ripped body" in 90 guaranteed. This sounds great. The only problem is surviving the 90 days. It's a very intense and militant routine, not to mention a big time commitment. The program is called P90X and you can check out their website here. You may have seen the infomercials. I read some reviews and everybody agrees on one thing . . . The program works, but it's HARD. I just don't know if I'm tough enough or motivated enough.

Karlo has agreed to go through this torture along with me so now I really have to make a decision. I'm thinking of taking it on for February/March/April which would put us in great biking shape for the beginning of the season. Well, it will do that . . . or kill us both. Then there's the whole issue of that big scary number coming up in July. I need to prepare for that. Uuuugh, I just can't decide!!!

The Mystery of the Disappearing Fish

What is with my fish tank? This afternoon I decided that my next blog post would be about my missing sucker fish. I truly can't figure out what is going on. I think there is a Bermuda Triangle in my tank. Or maybe it's an Eastford Rectangle! Some strange force is making my fish vanish. About a month or so ago I lost my sucker fish. Finding no trace of him, I assumed I sucked my sucker fish during the water change. Figuring it was my fault, I didn't think too much about it. But this past weekend I did another water change and this time I took a close inventory of my fish before I started. To my dismay, I realized that my sucker fish was missing again. Something fishy is going on here (pun intended).

Before I could write my blog entry, I came home and fed the fish. Only now I realized that I lost ANOTHER fish. This time my beautiful blue male guppy. I am heart broken and completely puzzled. WHERE do they go? There are no signs of either fish and if you've seen my tank, you know there aren't any places to hide. Is it possible that the other vultures are completely devouring my fish?

This stinks. Next time, I am going to get a half dozen sucker fish. Maybe that will allow me to go two consecutive months without going to the pet store for more fish.

And while I'm on the subject of fish . . . yesterday Lisa made a vow on her blog to draw something every day. This, I suppose, is because she's a real artist and needs to flex her artistic muscles. But I thought that sounded like fun and although I can't possible draw something every day (unless stick figure doodles at my desk count), I thought I will try to draw something every week. And by 'something' I mean a cartoon like object. In honor of my missing fish, here's my first drawing.

Not a Particularly Good Day

Remember when I described how good socks can make my day? Not only did I have Columbia socks on my "Paula's Favorites" list, but I get thrilled to get socks for Christmas. I am truly a fan of nice socks. But at the same time, bad socks can ruin my day . . . And today is one of those days. I have terrible, non soft, slouchy socks on. And the worst part is that I'm wearing boots that make the slouchy socks even worse. With every step, they slide even further down my foot. This means that every 200 steps or so, I have to unzip my boot and hike up my socks. This is getting old real quick. I need to keep an emergency sock reserve in my desk for days like this.

And that's not the only dark cloud shadowing my day. Yesterday I got that familiar, tingly, strange feeling in some of my fingers. My heart sank as dread swept over me. That's right - it's winter and that means it's time for my dots to sprout. It's my own fault. One day last week we went for a hike and I didn’t wear gloves because I wanted to take pictures. Remember that cute picture of Karlo and Peanut by the river? Well, it came at the price of 3 new dots. Today there are only tell-tale signs that they are coming. My fingers are getting very sensitive and I can see the round mounds forming. From here it will be 2 weeks of hell as they grow worse every day until they finally heal. What a joy. And did I wear gloves this morning, knowing that my dots are starting to form? No, I forgot. I better just stop complaining now because I deserve what I get.

Weekend Recap

We had a fun weekend. We started the birthday celebration Friday night. Rick & Nancy came over for dinner so I made a party out of it. I got a cake and some candles and made a secret plan for our neighbor Sharon to arrive just before I served the cake. I had asked Sharon to do me a big favor and take delivery of and store Karlo's presents. I convinced Karlo that I had no gift for him this year and I'm pretty sure he believed me. Then just before we lit the candles, our doorbell rang and our neighbor showed up claiming that the UPS man delivered some boxes to the wrong house. What perfect timing. Sharon joined us for the cake and the celebration and Karlo was thrilled to get his new toys. You will see them in the slide show below.

On Saturday Karlo was like a little kid playing outside. While he amused himself I tried out my Zumba videos. Oh what fun. I love it, like I knew I would. When I started the video, I had 10 seconds of horror as the guy started to talk in Spanish. I thought, "Great I got the darn DVDs on EBay rather than the official site and this is what I get." But I was very relieved to see that after the Spanish is spoken a girl repeats everything in English. I signed up for a 10 week Zumba course starting in a couple weeks and I can't wait. I'm very glad that I'm going to have a head start by learning all the steps. If you haven't found yourself a class yet, you should. Guarantee good time and great exercise.

Saturday afternoon Karlo and I headed out to civilization. I promised Karlo dinner and a movie. We first shopped a little and both treated ourselves to new shoes. Then we went to see "The Bucket List." Karlo felt that was appropriate given his age (of WAY over 40). I have to say, during the first 20 minutes I totally regretting picking this movie. There were way too many scenes of sick cancer patients. Just the thought of these hospital scenes makes me depressed and queasy. But as the movie went on, I enjoyed it more and more. It turned out to be a tour of the world with great life lessons. I highly recommend the movie. I laughed, I cried and most of all, I got inspired. I'm working on my "bucket list" now.

After the movie we went to our favorite restaurant, the Asian Bistro in Mansfield, and had a wonderful dinner. We had some plum wine that was out of this world. If you're ever at the Eastbrook mall you gotta try this place out.

Sunday was a blur. I worked feverishly on my YogaDudes business stuff while Karlo worked on his book. We did manage to have some fun with our soon-to-be new neighbors. All in all, it went way too fast.

Who Wants Some Extra Cash?

California Sue just informed me of something that you might be interested in. If you bought any diamonds between the years 1994 – 2006 you are probably eligible to get some cash. I just happened to have gotten engaged during those years and I know many of you also have. Here’s the scoop that I took from NBC news web site. Either read below or watch this video: http://video.wnbc.com/player/?id=203850

The company that controls a huge share of the rough diamond market has agreed to pay nearly $300 million in a price-fixing dispute.

Customers who bought finished diamonds might be able to get hundreds of dollars back.

De Beers, one of the largest diamond suppliers in the world, has agreed to give Americans money back as a result from a class action lawsuit against the company alleging antitrust violations.

John Maher, the plaintiffs’ attorney, said the diamond leader violated the law.

"They controlled and monopolized the sale of rough diamonds and as a result merchants paid more than they should have for those stones," he said.

De Beers has not admitted to doing anything wrong in the $295 million settlement. An earmark of $135.4 million has been made for consumers who file a claim.

Consumers can download information online at the settlement Web site.

The diamonds could have been purchased from any jewelry store in the country between Jan. 1, 1994, and March 31, 2006.

According to the claims administrator, a consumer who purchased a $2,000 engagement ring would be entitled to a maximum of $640 back. However, consumers are warned not to count that money yet as the formula only takes into account the value of what a consumer purchased and how many people file claims.

For those eligible, the filing deadline is May 19.

Here is the link to file a claim online. https://diamondsclassaction.com/index.htm

A Big Day

Two very special people in my life are both celebrating a birthday today. I always found it quite curious that my closest and best childhood friend and my husband (my current best friend) share the same birthday. Maybe there's something to be said about astrology and compatible signs after all. And to add to that theory, I've also always loved Kevin Cosner, who was born on the exact same day as Karlo, same year, same day. Why am I so drawn to people born on that day? Very strange.

Anyway, I want to give a great big shout out to Regina who is turning the big 40 today. I was about to say that she's the first of the crew to hit the big number, but that is actually not true. Another "South End friend" squeaked in without ridicule in December. Despite the fact that she was born in a different year, we have all adopted "Chicago Sue" as "one of us." This will be the year for most all my girlfriends to turn 40. Am I ready for this? Not sure. Happy Birthday Reggie. I hope you're livin' it up today!

And Happy Birthday Karlo, you handsome dog . . . (I wish I scanned the birthday card I gave him today. It was an adorable greyhound with a red bow tie on and it said "Happy birthday you handsome dog." Adorable) We won't mention how old Karlo is turning today. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure he would have been happier if I didn't mention his birthday at all. But I did. So there. Enjoy your day Karlo, and sorry I'm making you cook tonight.

Exciting News

As some of you may know, I have put my book writing on hold the day that Karlo announced that HE wanted to write a book. What a surprise this was. No sooner did I start my own book, he comes up with this idea. Knowing that the chances of me getting published where far less than me winning lotto (without ever buying tickets), I decided to put all my efforts into Karlo's book. After all, his might actually make us some money, while mine was just another creative project to keep me busy.

Luckily I had already done a little research on where to begin with the very intimidating task of contacting publishers. The more I read, the more hopeless the whole process seemed. But then again, what do you have to lose?

Not long after Karlo got his idea and started to jot down some ideas, I decided to take a very bold step and contact a publisher that we have some sort of "work connection" with. I thought using our association to the company we work for couldn't hurt. And I was right. It got my initial email read and paid attention to. We started right off with some clout and were no longer just nobodies with a dream of being published.

It's been 3 months of talking to this publisher and submitting our initial proposal and book outline. That was probably the hardest part of the whole ordeal. Writing the book is one thing, but selling it to a publisher is a whole 'nother daunting task. Karlo is a wiz at the technical stuff. That flows out of his brain like air out his . . . Nose, yes nose, that's what I was going to say. But the creative, business end of the writing was up to me. I was the one that had to sell this book to the publisher.

But first Karlo needed to explain to me, in laymen terms, what this book is all about. Now before you get all excited to read Karlo's book, let me warn you. It's about 5-axis CNC milling. You still interested? I didn't think so. The problem is, neither am I. But yet, I need to become an instant expert. And I think I did.

We sat down for endless hours one weekend and Karlo rambled on while I tried to formulate brilliant cohesive sentences. After submitting it, I got a response that told me that if I ever considered another career, I should strongly consider becoming a book publicist! I had to look up exactly what a publicist does and once I found out, I determined that was a good compliment to get - especially if we were hoping to get past this initial stage.

Well, we finally got the good word from the publisher yesterday. Our outline was reviewed by the most highly respected "expert" in the field and he loved it. Without even seeing our "sample chapter" they have already committed to publishing it. I'm still in shock.

All day today I kept thinking how incredibly proud I am of Karlo. After all, English is his 4th language and he is completely self-taught. He never had the benefit of one single language or grammar class and now he's going to be a published author. Then it also hit me that I'm also proud of myself. After all, we just got a commitment from a publisher and they have yet to see one word written by Karlo. I was the one that wrote the proposal and outline. I achieved what, four months ago, I thought was an impossible task.

For The Love of Dogs

Who doesn’t love dogs? I sure do love mine . . . despite the fact that the little stinker (literally, stinker) is going to cost us between $200 - $500 this month. Like we need THAT. But her dragon breath has GOT to go. I just made an appointment with the vet to have her teeth cleaned. The bill is going to kill me, but if I don’t do it, her breathe will also kill me.

So in honor of the dogs we love, here’s some pics of my favorite pups and their favorite humans. I can't find a good picture of Bents and his favorite human (which of course is ME).

Two Accomplishments of the Night

I had a very busy day at work today and didn't have a chance to blog. I didn't even have a chance to think about something smart to say. So I was going to let the day slip by without an entry . . . But since I accomplished two things tonight, I thought I would share.

First off, you remember the painting project we did over the weekend . . . it all started when I couldn't stand the big blank white wall outside of our bedroom. It drove me nuts every day. We desperately needed artwork and something to put on that wall. I couldn't decide what should go there as far as furniture. I was thinking maybe a pretty leather bench, but do we really need another place to sit down? In the empty hallway no less? Probably not. So the hunt continued, unsuccessfully for months.

Then a couple of weekends ago I spotted some cool artwork for the wall. It would allow me to fill the entire wall and it was a style that I knew Karlo would love - metal. How could I go wrong? I brought them home and, just as I suspected, Karlo loved them. That same day my friend Sue came over for a visit and she agreed they looked great, but she also added the comment that the wall could use some color. That was it. Now I HAD to paint.

And so I did. The paint was barely dry when I could stand the empty bottom half of the wall no longer. Withing 48 hours of the paint going on, we were shopping for furniture. We were shopping on a shoe string budget and I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted. All I knew was that it needed to fill the dead space and if I could use it for any sort of storage that would be a bonus.

Tonight we picked up our new addition and I just want to point out that this thing fit into our Golf. I still think that VWs are heaping piles of you know what, but I have to say, that Golf is amazingly versatile. We haven't really missed the truck yet.

So here's my wall before:

And here's the wall tonight. Now I just have to figure out what to store in it and what pretty things to display on top of it. More shopping . . . yeah!

Oooops, I almost forgot my second accomplishment - actually third, if you count helping Karlo carry that furniture up our narrow staircase. I made some super yummy tortellini and sausage soup. If I wasn't so lazy I would type up the recipe. If you really want it, email me. It was very, very good. And since my camera has a "Food mode" that I just had to test out, here's a picture of my masterpiece.

Snow Day

I declared today an official snow day and we stayed home. Living in the sticks does have some advantages. It gives you a good excuse to play hookie. Karlo is outside now working on snow removal and that should take at least another hour. By the time we would have gotten to work it would have been noon. Why bother at that point?

Besides, after the weekend we had we could use an extra day off. I must have spent a good 7+ hours painting over the past two days. And that doesn't include the prep time - which in this house is ungodly. At least 2 complete rolls of masking tape and more switch plate covers than you can imagine. I still don't know what half of our light switches control!

Thankfully Karlo helped me on Saturday. I flat out refused to paint the tallest portions of the wall. At one point I was as far as I was willing to go on the ladder and Karlo insisted that I look down at him . . . only he wasn't at the bottom of the ladder. He was standing in the kitchen as I was at the near peek of the roof. He HAD to make me look down. From that point on, I was too scared to go any higher. That should teach him to tease me. Now he got roped into the painting project.

You can see in this photo Karlo painting the tallest parts of the walls and you might also be able to see the color. I'm so pleased to report that I bought "tear free paint." It's not like tear-free shampoo in that it doesn't sting if you get it in your eyes. More like, it didn't make me cry like some paints that I have picked in the past. From the minute it went on the wall, I knew I made a good choice.

So I'm finally thrilled with the whole house. All the hallway walls upstairs and the foyer downstairs are now freshly painted. No more glaring white walls, or as I call them, blank canvases, crying out to me for some color. I can finally rest.
But seems Karlo never gets a chance to rest. When he wasn't helping me paint he was playing lumberjack, splitting three trailer loads of wood by hand with an axe. He wanted to harvest as much wood as he could before the big snowfall. After all that work, now's he working on clearing the snow. Thank goodness he has lots of energy. I'm getting tired just watching him.

Online Shoe Success

A couple of weekends ago I met my friend Sheryl at the Ever Green walk for lunch. We only planned to have lunch together, but when she said that she wanted to run into Clarks to look for some comfortable shoes, I thought, "I need some casual black shoes . . . I should go too." So with very little arm twisting, I joined her in her pursuit for a new pair of shoes. I went from mildly wanting a new pair of casual black shoes, to desperately needing them, that day!

So the quest began. I found at least a dozen pair of shoes and boots in Clarks that I loved. Some where crazy motorcycle-looking boots or big furry boots that I really didn’t need. Others were very athletic looking and super comfy hybrid shoes that I also didn't need. All I really needed was something that I can wear with jeans to work and out shopping. Something with a little heel (to wear with my longer jeans) but comfy enough to shop all day or maybe even, if I was really lucky, comfy enough to wear at a trade shoe. Our corporate uniform usually includes black pants and finding comfortable black shoes is never an easy task.

Over two hours later we found ourselves at DSW. By now I have tried on, no joke, 100 pairs of shoes. I tortured the poor sales guy at Clarks by requesting and trying on 8 different pairs of shoes and having none of them fit me right or not hurt me (I’m sorry, but if I'm spending over $60 on shoes, they shouldn't hurt). I knew that DSW would be easier because I can just try them on without the help of a salesperson. And so I did . . . Pair after pair. To this moment, I'm still not sure if I wear an 8 or an 8.5. I'm betting my real size is 8.25 which, of course, doesn't exist. I could not find one pair of shoes that fit and didn't hurt. This, ladies, is worst than bathing suit shopping. I hate shoe shopping.

But now I was obsessed with finding a pair of black shoes. Maybe it was just the sport of it all. I HAD to win this game that I started. So I turned to my faithful friend, the Internet. I knew this was taking a huge leap of faith. If I could try on 100 pairs of shoes and not find any that fit, what were the chances of buying a pair online and not having to return them? Slim at best.

But I took the chance. I bought a pair of black clogs from Famous Footwear. They allowed me to search by size, color, style, heel height. No boxes to rummage through. No sales guy to bug. No pressure to buy. They even had customer reviews and the pair I found got great reviews for comfort and true sizing. Hmmmm, too bad I don't even know my real size. But still I took the chance.

And I am happy to report that the shoes arrived yesterday and they fit perfect. Not only do they fit, but I've been wearing them all day and they ARE extremely comfy. So nice, in fact, that I just went online to buy a pair in brown. Bummer that my size wasn't available, but I'm not going to complain. I'm grateful for the ones that I got.

And I also discovered that they have great sales on Fridays. Check it out: http://search.famousfootwear.com/q-finds/

Happy shoe shopping.

Fashion 101

Or maybe I should have titled this “What Not to Wear.”

When I was in Boston a couple of months ago I sadly watched all the chic city girls fill into the meeting rooms. I enjoyed watching all the stylish clothes and that’s when it occurred to me that I don’t belong in the city — not wearing my LLBean sweaters anyway. After studying all the fashionable chicks and what they were wearing, I decided that I wanted two new pieces of wardrobe: a ¾ sleeve trapeze jacket and a long vest-type sweater. Those two things seemed to be the trend in Boston this year.

And I got them both. I bought two cute little jackets and my big funny-sleeved, long vest. This morning when I put the sweater on I got some strange looks from Karlo. He made a comment like, “That sweater is funny” in his disapproving tone. So when I later questioned why he doesn’t like my sweater he told me, “You look like a homeless gypsy that just lost her job.” Hmmmm, not the look I was going for, but it’s too late and we are off to work.

The very first person that saw me this morning commented and actually complimented me on my wardrobe. It was my manager and in 14 years he never made a comment about my clothes ever. When he told me that he liked my “sweater thing” I had to laugh and share Karlo’s comment with him. That’s when Ben laughed and then fessed up that he liked my wardrobe because it reminded him of Pirates of the Caribbean. Good grief. He even made me pose with his sword to get the full effect. Here I am . . . .

Well, at least I know what to wear next Halloween. Apparently I’m in costume today!

Puppy Dove

What a riot. My friend Sue (AKA "Chicago Sue") made a commercial for the Dove "Make a commercial" contest. This reminds me an awful lot of the Apprentice show and I'm quite sure this must have come about from one of those episodes. But anyway, Sue teamed up with a friend (that for some strange reason was not me) and made the most adorable Dove commercial, featuring none other than her way-to-cute dog O'Malley. Now O'Malley is actually a boy, but he's such a good actor that he pulled off playing this part of a female. You gotta check it out. And not only do you need to check it out, but you need to rate the commercial with lots of stars so that Sue can win the contest, get discovered, become a famous commercial maker and then hire me.

OK so, go to this web site: http://dovecreamoil.msn.com/gallery.aspx and do a search for "Puppy Dove." That will bring up Sue's commercial. From there click on the thumbnail and you will get to see O'Malley the star.

My Bliss

I am a sick puppy . . . I actually want to get sick. I’m craving a cold. I’m longing to spend an entire day lying on my couch, in my favorite new socks, under my favorite new blanket, reading my favorite new book. I’m actually hoping that Tammy rubbed some of her never ending cold germs on the blanket before she gave it to me!

When we were driving home from work yesterday listing all the projects and work we needed to do when we got home, all I could think about was taking a shower and getting into those new cuddly pink socks. Every year Karlo gets me a pair of cute socks and this year’s pair are my favorite. I can’t stop thinking about my blanket and my book. When I woke up this morning I asked Karlo if it was time to put on my socks and get on the couch. I think I’m becoming addicted. If any of you reading have a cold, please sneeze into an envelope and mail it to me!

More Favorites

I just discovered a new product and it needs to be added to my list of all-time favorite things!

This past weekend Tammy gave me a blanket, but it’s not just any blanket. It is THE BEST blanket in the world. When I opened the gift on Saturday and stuck my hand inside the rolled up blanket I was amazed at how soft it was. As a matter of fact Lisa’s description was that it was “freakishly soft.” But I had no idea just how amazing it would feel to lay under it. Not only is the furry lining like lying on a cloud, the top of the blanket is heavy suede and is the warmest blanket I ever had. I am truly in heaven lying under it. Thanks so much Tammy!!! Everyone should own one of these. It came from JC Penny and I think it’s called Studio (or something like that). Run there NOW and get yourself one (or two).

Any my new favorite thing to do under this blanket is read. I haven’t read at home . . . well, in so long I can’t even remember. Seems the only time I make time to read is when I’m traveling. I read at the airports, on the plane, in my hotel room, etc. But I never carve out time at home for this guiltless pleasure. Not until this weekend.

Lisa bought me a new book that she knew I would love. She instructed me to cuddle up in my papasan (I think that’s what it’s called) chair upstairs and read. What an interesting concept this was. She was suggesting that I actually SIT in the little reading nock that I made upstairs. We have lots of wasted, useless space at home and I tried to fill these spaces with whatever miscellaneous furniture I had. The result upstairs is a very cozy reading nook in front of the big wall of windows. What a perfect spot to read, however I probably never would have done it if Lisa hadn’t suggested it. On Sunday afternoon I curled up in that chair, as the sun was setting through the window, and started my book. It was great — both the book and the chair.

Now my evening routine is to take my shower earlier so that I have time to snuggle on the couch under my favorite blanket and read this awesome book, which by the way is called “Eat, Pray, Love.” I highly recommend it. The author very much reminds me of ME. So how can you not love that? Hee hee

Girlfriend Reunion

This weekend was the annual girlfriend reunion. It was so nice to get together with old friends again, if even for a few short hours. Before everyone arrived, I decided that this would be the last ‘girlfriend party.’ I know driving out to my place these days is a big undertaking and the guilt of Regina making that very long trek to find that not everyone showed up was just too much for me to bear. I was starting to feel as though it just wasn’t worth it — worth everybody’s time and gas, worth my stress and preparation. Why bother?

Well, I changed my mind. Actually Regina changed my mind, as did the rest of the girls that showed up. They really made me believe that it wasn’t a chore for them to drive out to the country and that they appreciated the time together as much as I did. We had a wonderful afternoon together. The girls did their scrapbook assignments; we discussed our 2007 changes and our goals for next year. Everyone took on their ‘homework assignments’ and I will hold them all to it. Now we have to have the party again next year just to see if everyone comes through on their goals.

A great fringe benefit of the party was my new and improved Christmas tree. Not only did Lisa give me a wonderful gift of a pretty box filled with rustic ornaments (my dream come true) but the girls graciously allowed me to get first choice in the ornament swap. I made out like a bandit and got adorable items. I HAD to make sure I got the red motorcycle! It was so sad taking the tree down yesterday after I finally got it all filled with ornaments that I love. Oh well, now I’ll have something to look forward to next year.

Girls, thanks for coming. I had a great time. It’s a special day for me and the memories we make will last a lifetime.

PS - sorry that I didn't take any pictures this year!

Have You Tried Zumba?

Do you even know what Zumba is? I’m still trying to figure out how this slipped by me when millions of people all over the world are doing it. What, do I live under a rock . . . . in the middle of nowhere? Oh, I guess I do.

But at any rate, a friend recently told me about Zumba classes. She assured me that I would love it and I have to take a class. Being curious about it, I googled the word “Zumba” today and sure enough, I’m already hooked and I haven’t even seen a video or taken a class. I’m so excited about it, I want to become an instructor!

Tina, if you haven’t already discovered this, you will love it. This is the work out of my dreams. It’s all dancing. Doing what I call “artificial cardio” is too boring for me. What I mean by artificial cardio is using stationary machines indoors to simulate being outside and doing the real thing. I just can’t do it. I can play outside for hours and hours on end. But put me on a cardio machine and I last 10 minutes tops.

I have the weight lifting routine worked out, but biking, hiking and kayaking are my only sources of cardio. Those are sometimes hard to do when it’s 4 degrees outside. But now I found this dancing exercise routine that doesn’t look boring at all. I already bought the DVDs and I’m inquiring about a class in Tolland. I’m very much looking forward to starting a new routine for this year. This was a New Years Resolution that was begging to find its way to me. I’m so glad it did.

If you want to check out the Zumba web site, it’s: https://www.zumba.com/index.cfm

Whippet Looking For a New Home

Do you or anybody you know have any interest in adopting a 7 year old male whippet? A whippet is a smaller version of a greyhound. They have the same great qualities: quiet, smart, loving, well behaved.

My friend Jean breeds whippets and has come across one that will be needing a new home soon. I think it's a long story of why this poor little fellow will need a new home, but if you know somebody who might be interested, please let me know and I will get all the details.

Happy New Year

Sorry I’m a little late with my New Years wishes. I really don’t know where the time is flying these days. Jessica has been visiting all week and we’ve been keeping ourselves busy. It’s tradition that Jessica is with us for New Years every year, however this year the tradition was slightly broken. Jess got a better offer for New Year’s Eve. I can’t imagine what would be better than hanging around with a bunch of old folks who are anxiously looking at their watches . . . in anticipation . . . so we can go home and go to sleep. That seems to be what our big yearly celebration amounts to. As a matter of fact, this year was so incredibly lame that every single one of the guests at the party we attended left BEFORE the ball dropped. It was mass exodus around 11 PM. We hadn’t planned to go home early, but when the opportunity presented itself, we jumped at it! So Karlo and I were somewhere on Rt. 190 in Staffford (I think) when we pulled the car over to kiss each other a happy new year. It just doesn’t get any better than that! Jessica, on the other hand, had a rockin’ good time, as every teenager should.

I’ve been pondering my New Year’s resolution. I make the same darn resolutions every year and they always fail miserably. Why do I even bother? I am forever trying to drink more water and exercise more, but it never works. I won’t really commit to working out religiously until I have an event to train for. And the water thing, well I have no good excuse for that one. My lips are always so numb, they feel as though they will fall off. I still don’t drink. I’m hopeless.

I think rather than setting some impossible resolution I am just going to try to be as positive as I can be. I am going to try to practice the lessons from “The Secret” as much as I can. It really does take a conscious effort and it’s too easy to quickly forget all about it. The change of the year feels like a fresh clean slate. This will be the year of positive energy and hopefully some good things will come our way.

As far as the dogs go, they have resolved to happily share all their toys with no growling or snipping. So far they are doing great.
